Gallery Information
Starting her career 1983 in the German branch of the ‘Dia Art Foundation’ Brigitte Schenk worked with Joseph Beuys and A.R. Penck and as a private curator until she launched her own gallery in Cologne in 1992.
The focus of the gallery is contemporary art, in particular painting and new media and since 1999 the transferral of art from Western society into the Arab world. The ‘Andy Warhol Tour’ through Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah in 2002 was an extremely successful exhibition conceived to introduce the work of Andy Warhol to the region.
Since 2003 Brigitte Schenk has been curating the Royal Collection of H.H. Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi from Sharjah, the president of the Sharjah Biennial and daughter of the ruler.
In 2008 Brigitte Schenk curated the exhibition ‘Focus Orient’, a selection of Orientalist photographs of the 19th and early 20th centuries at the Sharjah Art Museum. More recently the gallery has become equally committed to bringing art from the Arab world to the West with a series of exhibitions in the Cologne space of contemporary Emirati artists including, Abdullah Al Saadi in 2005; Shahram Karimi in 2008; Tarek Al-Ghoussein in 2009; Lamya Gargash in 2010; the group exhibition ‘Iran Today’ in 2010 and an exhibition with Hasan Sharif planned for 2012.
