Gallery Information
Anchored by a strong commitment to modern and contemporary art in Lebanon, the Galerie Janine Rubeiz takes its roots from the precious legacy of ‘Dar el Fan’, a highly qualified art space and cultural platform under the direction of Janine Rubeiz between 1967 and 1976. Rubeiz’s efforts were both cultural and political, for she believed that cultural and artistic activities foster communication among communities, offer enrichment through diversity, combat all forms of discrimination, stop hatred and war and ultimately cultivate peace. ‘Dar el Fan’s’ premises were destroyed during the war and Rubeiz then moved her projects to her own apartment, turning it into a gallery that hosted cultural and artistic events right up until her death in 1992.
The present gallery established in 1993 bears her name and was founded by her daughter Nadine Begdache who similarly holds strongly to the belief that cultural development is an integral part of the socio-political maturity of the country. “We need art. We need culture. They play an essential role in keeping Lebanon alive” explains Begdache. She adds “…culture is a major part of our development…I feel a big responsibility towards the artists with whom I work.” The gallery strives to make Lebanese contemporary and modern art known both in Lebanon and abroad.
