Gallery Information
Galerie Sfeir-Semler opened in Germany in 1985 and then in Lebanon in 2005. Since opening in Beirut, the gallery has carved a place for itself as a key player in contemporary artistic practices emerging in the Middle East, focusing on conceptual art. The Beirut gallery has mounted major one-person exhibitions of artists such as Walid Raad, Akram Zaatari and Yto Barrada as well as hosting dynamic curatorial projects such as Bidoun Magazine’s ‘Noise’, Catherine David’s ‘In the Middle of the Middle’, and ‘HomeWorks’, Ashkal Alwan’s bi-annual forum on contemporary cultural practices in Beirut.
In the last 5 years, a wave of development and international interest has changed the artistic landscape of the region, and Galerie Sfeir-Semler’s artists have responded in kind. The diverse range of artists the gallery represents reflect the striking developments in the Middle East, as it grows into a vital arena for cultural exchange and artistic production.
