Gallery Information

Hanart TZ Gallery has been a pioneer in exploring the Chinese cultural map and, over 20 years, has worked with numerous artists now internationally prominent. When the gallery opened in 1983, in a basement on Kadoorie Avenue, it was intended as a venue to view art unfamiliar to the Hong Kong public. Artists of the greater Chinese art world from Mainland China, Taiwan as well as overseas émigré congregated, and in time the gallery became a locus of emerging Chinese artists. As such Hanart has served as a significant link with the international art world and its role in landmark exhibitions, such as ‘The Stars 10 Years’ (1989) and ‘China’s New Art Post-1989’ (1993, toured until 1997), has become legacy.

Hanart TZ Gallery has organised significant exhibitions including Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming, at the Singapore Art Museum in 1986 and Place Vendôme in Paris in 1997; and ‘A Strange Heaven’, an exhibition of contemporary Chinese photographic art from Mainland China, Taiwan and Kong Kong in Prague in 2003; ‘Universe in the Mind: 60 Years of Painting by Liu
Kuo-sung’, in Beijing Palace Museum in 2007; ‘Chinese Painting - Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun, Feng Mengbo’ at Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague in 2008. In 2010, the gallery opened a new 5,000 square foot exhibition space, Hanart Square, where larger shows of experimental art and installations are presented.
