Gallery Information

Meem Gallery was launched in 2007 by Sultan bin Sooud Al-Qassemi, Mishal Hamed Kanoo and Charles Pocock. The gallery’s aim is to promote the work of modern and contemporary Middle Eastern artists and inspire viewers to engage with, and in doing so gain, a deeper appreciation for the art of this region. Modern masters exhibited at Meem include Dia Al-Azzawi, pioneer of modern Arab art; eminent sculptor, Parviz Tanavoli; internationally acclaimed filmmaker and photographer Abbas Kiarostami; acclaimed artist Ali Omar Ermes and the graphic artist Nja Mahdaoui. In 2012 the gallery will be proud to present works by Ibrahim El Salahi and Mohammed Omar Khalil.

In addition to exhibiting important modern and contemporary works, Meem encourages a greater understanding of Arab and Iranian art through its bilingual publications, the Al Noor Library, and contributions to the development of arts education in the region through the research unit NIMEA (Al Noor Institute
of Middle Eastern Art).

The Al Noor Institute and its library, housed at Meem, is regarded as the largest resource centre for Middle Eastern art in the region. To date, the library houses a collection of 8,000 books, journals and auction catalogues relating to Islamic
and modern and contemporary Middle
Eastern art.

For Abu Dhabi Art 2011 Meem Gallery presents a two-man show of Dia Al-Azzawi and Parviz Tanavoli.
